There are many types of viruses in nature that can cause influenza, especially as one strain mutates into another and another… and so on. The influenza virus is found in all mammals as well as most birds and is different from that which brings about the common cold – it is far more severe in the way it incapacitates the carrier. There are 3 main types of influenza virus labelled as A, B and C. Wild aquatic birds are the main carriers of type A flu virus, which when spread through domesticated poultry, enters the human body causing epidemics and the recent avian and swine flu pandemics. Type B influenza virus is almost exclusive to humans and mutates much less than type A, so it is less diverse and people generally acquire a level of natural immunity to it, but this may not be life – long. There have been no known pandemics due to this type of flu virus. Type C virus is found in humans, dogs and pigs, may cause local epidemics but usually causes mild diseases in children.
Some flu symptoms are common to all types of influenza and are listed below, while there may be additions in case of specific types of virus:
• Coldness and fever
• Body pain, especially in the joints and throat
• Headaches
• Irritation in eyes resulting watery reddened look
• Fatigue
• Flushed face and skin
• Coughing and sneezing
In addition, children (especially those suffering from type B flu) tend to have diarrhoea and abdominal pain. In most cases symptoms appear very suddenly within a couple of days of infection and can be differentiated from those brought on by the common cold (which they resemble in the early stages) by the extreme fatigue, very high fever and the suddenness of it.
Homeopathic flu remedies for flu symptoms are based on the symptoms that are exhibited by the infected person, and there are numerous remedies specific to the symptoms. So while the formulations are many; belladonna, nux vomica, phosphorus, apis mellifica, arsenicum album, eupatorium perforliatum, ferrum phosphoricum, Gelsemium etc., bryonia is more effective when headaches, muscle aches, cough, stomach pain, strong thirst and grumpiness are the main concerns. On the other hand, aconitum is good in cases where the flu comes on intensely and suddenly with accompanying fever, constricted pupils, strong thirst and a feeling of anxiety.
Allopathic flu treatment also involves giving paracetamol to relieve the pain and fever, but includes antiviral vaccines to try and get rid of the viruses themselves and bring about some level of immunity. However there is some doubt as to how universally effective these anti viral serum are, with the viruses that tend to cause the epidemics and pandemics mutating so fast and regularly. In any case, most cases of the flu are not severe enough to cause anxiety. Taking specific medicine for your flu symptoms together with plenty of rest, drinking enough fluids, eating lots of fruit, vegetables and some lean meat should be enough to get a person back on his or her feet soon enough.
